Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Martial, Courtois, Ozil, Ronaldinho

What’s the worst thing that could happen to Manchester United? It’s a question that fans of Liverpool, Manchester City and others could spend many happy hours pondering, but Hot Football Transfer Gossip may have found the answer.

It’s not missing out on the Champions League, or Louis van Gaal signing a new contract, or Marouane Fellaini being appointed player-manager.

No, the worst thing that could happen to Manchester United is that they become a selling club. And there’s a terrifying story in today’s Star that suggests that could happen.

Anthony Martial, a rare chink of light in United’s gloomy season, is reportedly wanted by Paris Saint-Germain. The Star says the French champions see the 20-year-old as an ideal replacement for Edinson Cavani, who is set to leave Paris this summer.

Which is fine because the striker is on a long-term contract at Old Trafford and United do not want to sell him, but what if he doesn’t want to stay? What if Martial would prefer to play Champions League football in his homeland, rather than negotiate the Europa League in an English backwater?

When we throw in the very real possibility that David de Gea could be lured to Real Madrid this summer, it creates a potential scenario where United could lose the only two players in their squad that they would dearly love to keep. That’s the definition of a selling club.

But don’t worry United fans, it hasn’t happened yet. Sleep easy and dream about Bernardo Silva, Andre Gomes and Renato Sanches instead.

The three Portugal international midfielders, average age 20, are all set to be watched by United scouts during Tuesday’s night friendly against Belgium, according to the Mirror. The trio are all clients of super agent Jorge Mendes, so maybe he’ll be able to sort out some kind of buy two, get the third free deal.

Another reason for United fans to be cheerful is Thibaut Courtois, the Chelsea goalkeeper who is once again being linked with Real Madrid - a move that would hugely boost United’s chances of keeping De Gea. The Sun says Real have turned their attentions to Courtois, who Chelsea apparently value at £79m, after giving up De Gea. The tabloid points out that the 6ft 6in Belgian has a Spanish girlfriend and a house in Madrid from his time at Atletico. Done deal.

Elsewhere, Tottenham and West Ham are tracking 18-year-old AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Sweeney (Mirror), unemployed Brazilian maestro Ronaldinho is looking for one last payday in China or the MLS (Sun) and Mesut Ozil has urged Arsenal to “splash the cash” on new signings in the summer (Standard). Poor, naive lad.
