THANE: Christian families across the city observed the anniversary of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday with prayer and fasting. Devotees started their day by participating in the Stations of the Cross or was of the Cross ceremony in their churches followed by a mass. They spent the day praying with their family and friends.
Daniel Fernandes (52), a Waghbil resident, said, “We follow the priest, holding a small cross, around the church and halt at 14 stops along the way representing the 14 station of the cross that trace the last steps of Jesus before his death, from the moment he was condemned to death till he was laid in the tomb.”
This day also marks the end of the 40-day Lent period during which members of the community fast, sacrifice their luxuries and conduct penance.
Many who have not been following this throughout the 40-day perios observe it today.
Rovina Pereira, a resident of Kharkar Ali area, said, “Whether people have been keeping a fast through Lent or not, they observe it on Good Friday. We abstain from meat, alcohol and other indulgences. Some even refrain from watching television or movies and spend the entire day offerning prayer.”
While it is the day of mourning and residents observe this by wearing shades of black, blue and green, it is all a celebration for devotees. “Jesus gave his life for the forgiveness of our sins on this day. It is the day good conquers evil and thus is known as ‘Good Friday’. While it is a day of mourning, it is very essential as it sets the stage for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter,” said Jude Fonseca (37), a resident of Kolbad area.
Christian families then flock to city churches for the main Mass ceremony after which the way of the cross is relived once again.
