PUNE:
Fabiano Caruana showed his fabulous ways at the most inappropriate moment for the Indian
chess fans.
Matching strong concepts and execution to great effect the Italian-turned-American humbled multiple
World Champion V Anand in the 10th round of the
Candidates tournament in
Moscow on Wednesday.
The result meant top seed Caruana (6 points) replaced Anand (5.5) as joint leader to give company to Sergey Karja kin of Russia (6) in this eight player, 14-round tournament Caruana, playing white, forced Anand's resignation in just 33 moves of English Opening (Four Knights, Kingside Fian chetto).
It makes Anand's game with Karjakin on Thursday so vital that even a draw can seri ously dent Anand's chances to qualify as Magnus Carlsen's challenger for November's World title match in New York Caruana launched a measured kingside attack after a "pretty fresh idead of Qc2" on the 12th move. He gave bishop for knight, allowed queen exchange to kill Anand's retaliation chances and then got rook for bishop to leave Anand in a hopeless position. The Ameri can said that Anand's Ne7 (17th move) came as a surprise to him. What left unsaid was it was probably ultra defensive and made Caruana's path smoother.
