Chef Saransh Goila is serving up delicacies from six Indian states, while The Bohri Kitchen is putting the Bohri Mohalla on your plate. We have the dope.

One’s in Bandra, the other is being hosted in Colaba. One is hyper-local, and focuses, mostly, on the culinary treasures of a neighbourhood, while the other spans food from six states. We bet you’ll have a difficult time making up your mind.

Chef Saransh Goila & The Dining Table
Many of you might be familiar with Chef Saransh Goila. Goila, who authored the food travelogue India on my Platter, has also hosted television shows Roti Rasta aur India and Healthy Fridge on Food Food. This Sunday, for the third edition of The Dining Table, Goila will be in the kitchen serving up delicacies from six states of India. The six-course sit-down lunch will feature, among others, Goila’s take on the Matra Mango Salad (a blend of local peas, pulses and Alphonso; Maharashtra); Gongurra Mushroom (mushroom cooked with the tangy sorrel leaf and stuffed into wallet-shaped kulchas with some apple and hung curd; Andhra Pradesh); Palak Patta Chat (crispy spinach leaves tossed with wild berries, potatoes and yoghurt; Uttar Pradesh); Butter Chicken and Rumali roti (Punjab); and Desi Ghee-wala Rajma Chawal, a recipe the chef picked up from a dhaba owner in Jammu. What’s for dessert? Chocolate Puchkas.

The Bohri Kitchen’s Bohri Mohalla brunch
The appeal of Bohri Mohalla, in Mumbai, is legendary. Every Ramzan, or nearly every other weekend, a large number of food lovers head to this neighbourhood near Bhendi Bazaar to feast on Baida Rotis, Sheekh and Shammi Kababs, Khiri (cow udders) and hand-churned ice-cream, among others. This weekend, Nafisa and Munaf Kapadia, the mother-son duo behind The Bohri Kitchen, are hosting a brunch buffet, which is partly inspired by the fare that is on offer at Bohri Mohalla, at Munaf’s home in Colaba.

“It is, in a way, our homage to the kind of food I used to crave for as a child,” says Nafisa, who was born and brought up in Bohri Mohalla. “The seekhs of Bar-b-que Corner, Taj Ice-cream, patveliyas, the malpuas at Tawakkals…just thinking of them makes me want to go there and eat them.” The menu includes items such as the Naan Sandwiches, made famous by bakeries in the Mohalla, patveliyas (aloo vadis leaves cooked in rich mutton gravy) faloodas and bheja fry bhuna. Nafisa says that they are thinking of doing something with freshly squeezed sugarcane juice to complement traditional fare such as rose sherbet that will be on offer at the brunch.
