Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens reached the second round of the Miami Open after overcoming Laura Robson's strong start to win in straight sets.

Great Britain's Robson led 3-0 in the first set and Flipkens had to save three set points to earn a tie-breaker, which she took 7/4. She then dominated the second set, breaking twice in succession to earn a 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 win.

Compatriot Alison van Uytvanck could not match Flipkens' effort, losing 6-3 7-5 to China's Peng Shuai in an hour and 38 minutes. Peng is ranked 664 as she also returns from a long-term injury, and recorded her first tour win in over a year.

Daria Kasatkina came through a three-set battle against Kateryna Bondarenko, winning 6-2 1-6 6-2, while Lesia Tsurenko beat Alexandra Dulgheru 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 6-3.

World number 32 Barbora Strycova, by contrast, won 6-2 6-0 against Anna-Lena Friedsam while Zarina Diyas dropped only one game in a 50-minute win over Olga Govortsova.

Zhang Shuai was also on court less than an hour as she beat wild card Sofia Zhuk 6-1 6-2, Madison Brengle won 6-4 6-3 against Camila Giorgi and fellow American Nicole Gibbs also reached round two, beating Yulia Putintseva 6-4 6-2.

There were also wins for Danka Kovinic, Margarita Gasparyan and Teliana Pereira.

Eugenie Bouchard, Dominika Cibulkova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands are among the players in action on Wednesday, when the men's tournament proper also begins after qualifying concluded on Tuesday.
