MSC to add Port of Hazira to Middle East-India / South Africa loop

SWISS-ITALIAN Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) will included the Indian Port of Hazira to its Middle East-India / South Africa weekly service, with a first call on April 9, reports Alphaliner.

Hazira is a town and a transshipment hub in the Surat district in the Gujarat stat, 120 nautical miles north of Mumbai, and one of the major ports of India, says Wikipedia.

The extended service will dock at Salalah, Jebel Ali, Port Qasim, Mundra, Hazira, Mumbai-Nhava Sheva, Colombo, Port Louis, Durban, Ngqura, Port Louis and back to Salalah.

The service turns in six weeks, using six vessels of 6,500-8,800 TEU. This is the second long-haul service directed by MSC to Hazira, adding to the Europe-Middle East-Indian sub continent 'IPAK" weeklyservice that started calling at the Indian port in July 2015.

Indian state-owned carrier Shipping Corp of India participates in the 'IPAK" loop through slots.

Hapag-Lloyd to add direct call at Civitavecchia Hapag-Lloyd is to extend the rotation of its 'Levante Express' (LEX) intra-Med service with the addition of Civitavecchia, which is the closest seaport to Rome.

The first ship to call at the new port will be the 2,824-TEU Satie on April 26. The 'LEX" service turns in three weeks using 2,500 - 2,800-TEU ships.

The revised rotation is Cagliari, Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples, Salerno, Cagliari, Alexandria, Damietta, Mersin, Izmir and back to Cagliari.

The move allows Hapag-Lloyd to connect Civitavecchia to its deep sea network through transhipments at its hubs of Cagliari and Damietta, as well as connecting the Italian port directly with the eastern Med.

The 'LEX" service will be the third regular container service for the Roma Container Terminal SPA, handling already the maxi-panamax ships of MSC's Med-USWC 'California Express" service via Panama, as well as the Malta-West Italy common feeder service of Unimed (UFS/Unifeeder) hubbing at Marsaxlokk.

Civitavecchia also handles the fruit oriented Med-Central America service of Cosiarma and several Grimaldi ro-ro services.
