: Electronic voting machines fitted with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices, through which a voter will be able to see a printout of the symbol of the candidate to whom he has voted, were subject to the first level of checking here on Tuesday.

The VVPAT will be introduced in the Tiruchi West constituency in the district for the first time in the Assembly election.

Collector K.S.Palanisamy on Tuesday supervised the checking of the machines at the Tiruchi West Taluk Office.

Later, he said that 339 VVPAT machines will be used in the 271 polling stations of the constituency.

The printout of the image, which could be viewed through a glass window for about seven seconds, would be retained in the VVPAT unit.

A team of eight engineers from the Bharat Electronics Limited were engaged in checking the operational readiness of the machines.

Meanwhile, the district authorities continued the sensitisation drive to achieve cent per cent polling in the election in various forms.

On Tuesday, Mr.Palanisamy distributed pamphlets carrying the message to voters in Tiruverumbur constituency.
