Chavara will be one of the constituencies in the State where one of the keenly watched contests will take place. This is the first Assembly election to take place after the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) had severed ties with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and joined the United Democratic Front (UDF).
More than a UDF or LDF fort, the constituency is known better as an RSP stronghold. The constituency was constituted in 1977 and since then only a RSP candidate has been elected from here.
The RSP veteran Baby John was elected from Chavara for five consecutive terms from 1977 to 1996. Mr. John was elected in 1967 and 1970 when Chavara used to be part of Karungapally too.
The constituency comprises five grama panchayats and a portion of the Kollam city Corporation. The panchayats are Panmana,Thevalakara, Chavara, Dalawapuram and Neendakara. The LDF was elected to power in four of the panchayats. In the 2011 Assembly elections, the UDF won by a margin of more than 6,000 votes.
