Weird But True

Serial underwear stealer turns out to be a frisky feline

A New Zealand puss is a real-life cat burglar, swiping men’s unmentionables from homes throughout her neighborhood.

Brigit, a 6-year-old Tonkinese cat, has ripped off nearly a dozen pairs of men’s briefs and more than 50 socks over the last two months.

“It’s an absolute obsession,” embarrassed owner Sarah Nathan told the New Zealand Herald. “A night does not go by without her bringing things home. I got up this morning and there were another four socks in the house.”

Like most felines do with rodents, Brigit leaves the captured panties all over the house for Nathan to find, including at the door, in her bed and in the garden.

“They feel as if they’ve come off the [clothes] line,” Nathan said of the purloined skivvies. “They’ve got that crispy feeling.”

Brigit’s underwear fetish has gotten so out of hand that Nathan has started leaving notes in her neighbors’ mailboxes asking if they’re missing any of their underwear and even posted about it on Facebook.

“I feel so bad about it,” she told the Herald. “Someone is spending a fortune on underwear.”

Nathan said this isn’t a new habit for her frisky feline, who used to bring home women’s undies and anything else she could find at their old apartment.

“She was much less discerning,” she said. “Now she’s decided menswear is the thing and it’s a very specific kind of underpants she likes.”

Nathan is planning to move again — this time to a 2-acre house in the middle of the country where she hopes to curb her cat’s bad behavior.

“Hopefully there’s something there she can find to catch, but if not, we may have to stash some undies around the farm to keep her stimulated,” she joked.
