'Impaired driving' charge considered for Janepob

'Impaired driving' charge considered for Janepob

Police are collecting evidence to press a third charge of driving with impaired ability against the driver of the Mercedes-Benz that crashed into a sedan in Ayutthaya last Sunday, killing two university post graduates.

Ayutthaya police commander Pol Maj Gen Sutthi Puangpikul said Sunday investigators considered the additional charge -- which carries a maximum jail term of three months and a 10,000 baht fine --  against Janepob Veeraporn at a meeting to discuss the case.

Police will question witnesses, police officers and hospital doctors and nurses to determine if there is enough evidence to lay a charge of driving with impaired ability, Pol Maj Gen Sutthi said.

“Whether the suspect will admit the charge, it is his right to defend himself and present evidence to confute the allegation according to legal proceedings,” Pol Maj Gen Sutthi said.

Mr Janepob, 37, the son of a wealthy luxury car importer, has been officially charged with reckless driving causing death, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years. He has admitted to police that his reckless driving killed Kritsana Thaworn, 32, and Thanthaphat Horsaengchai, 34, who were both pursuing master’s degrees at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.

Investigators are also considering a charge of obstructing an officer in the execution of his duty against Mr Janepob after he refused to give a blood sample for testing for alcohol and drugs after the deadly crash.
