JHARKAND (Web Desk / AFP) – Atleast five people in Indian city Jharkand were arrested on Friday for hanging two Muslim cowherds from a tree a day ago.

According to details, the arrested men belonged to an outfit for protection of cows.

Police is conducting raids to arrest three other people.

Two days back, bodies of Mazloom Ansari (35) and Imtiaz Khan (12) were found hanging from a tree.

The arrested men have claimed that they killed both the cattle traders for selling the cows in a fair.

Many Indian states including Jharkand have banned the consumption of cow meat, which has become even more contentious since the murder last year of a Muslim man wrongly suspected of eating beef.

Last September Mohammad Akhlaq was dragged from his house in northern Uttar Pradesh state and beaten to death by around 100 people over rumours he had eaten beef.

Two more Muslim men were killed in separate incidents involving alleged cow smuggling and beef consumption.

Some critics say the killings point to a rise in religious intolerance under the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
