Cops not buying mother's version
On Thursday morning, when her daughter was admitted to Sishu Bhawan in a critical condition, she got very upset and planned to go to her parents' house with the baby. Without informing her husband, Jitendra Chanda, and her in-laws, she quietly left the hospital premises with the baby and boarded an autorickshaw for Cuttack Railway Station. On the way at Badambadi, when she was changing the auto for the railway station, the baby accidentally fell from her hands and died.
Scared by the incident, Swarnalata picked up her dead baby, went to Jobra and dumped the body in a well. Then she returned to the hospital ward and informed her husband that their baby had gone missing.
However, police are quite suspicious about Swarnalata's story. Police officials claimed that there are many loopholes in her story as Badambadi is a very crowded place and its quite unbelievable that no one noticed that the baby fell from her hands and died. Besides, there was no injury mark on baby's body. Also, the well in which the baby was dumped is quite far from the railway station, said a senior police officer. "We suspect that the baby has been murdered, but we can get a clear picture only after arrival of the post-mortem report," said the police officer. DCP Arora said if the murder is not confirmed, Swarnalata will be booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide) of the IPC.
Notably, on March 17, the parents of the deceased baby, who are residents of Sunakhala in Khurda district, had lodged a complaint at Lalbag police station about their baby going missing while undergoing treatment at the government-run hospital. They had alleged that their baby was stolen from the hospital ward
