MYSURU: A day after TOI reported that adulterated liquor is blamed for the death of three villagers in Sindhuvalli, two separate teams of excise officials raided the houses suspected of selling liquor illegally and booked cases against some persons accused of bootlegging.
In all, nine cases, including five against women, have been filed for selling liquor without permit.
The teams, each headed by inspectors Susanna and Idayath, were supervised by deputy superintendent of excise Thamanna. The raids were carried out in the presence of panchayat officials.
Excise DC Jagadish Nayak told STOI that raids were conducted on houses, shops and some places where liquor was being sold till Friday. “But the officials didn’t find liquor there. Based on the statement by GP members, cases were booked against nine villagers — Shivanna, Mahadevamma, Govinda, Chenamma, Shobha, Siddamma, Shivarudra, Swami and Uma,” he added.
During a meeting later, the villagers were appealed to alert the officials in case they come across bootlegging.
Denying the sale of spurious liquor in the village, Nayak said that during raids, officials found liquor bottles and pouches bearing the number of licenced shops in Kadakola and Udbur villages. “Sindhuvalli village doesn’t have any licenced shop to sell liquor,” the DC said, and added that they will continue to keep an eye on illegal liquor business.
In its Saturday’s edition, TOI had reported about villagers blaming “adulterated liquor” for the death of three persons in their village in the recent past.
