Only vehicles having chains tied with tyres to ply on Tangmarg-Gulmarg road

SRINAGAR: Only vehicles having chains tied with tyres will be allowed to ply on the road between Tangmar and world famous ski resort of Gulmarg where about two feets of fresh snowfall was experienced during the past two days.
Traffic on the hilly road to ski resort was suspended from Tangmarg yesterday following more than a feet of snowfall. However, the authorities immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and cleared the snow on the road later in the day.
There was more than seven inches of fresh snowfall during the night, forcing authorities to suspend the traffic again this morning, official sources said, adding snow clearance operation has again been launched.
However, because of slippery road conditions, it was decided to allow vehicle having chains tied with tyres to ply between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, they said.
Hundreds of tourists from different parts of the country and abroad besides locals are arriving at Gulmarg, 55 km from summer capital, Srinagar, everyday to enjoy fresh snowfall. However, there was less snowfall this winter, forcing authorities to suspend national skiing champsionships.
Meanwhile, the upper heights, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected by Cable Car, received heavy to very heavy snowfall.
This will however attract more tourists to the ski resort, much to the delight of those associated with tourist trade at Gulmarg, where very less snowfall was recorded during the winter. (AGENCIES)
