House panel seeks suspension of asst prof

V S Ugrappa, chairman of the Legislative Committee on Women and Child Safety, has instructed vice chancellor of Tumkur University Dr Rajasab to suspend assistant professor of English department at University Arts College, Rajashekar, who is accused of sexually abusing girl students.

Following media reports on the sexual harassment case, the committee on prevention of sexual violence against women and child held a meeting with the officials, teachers and the students at the varsity campus on Thursday.

The committee obtained information on the said episode from VC Rajasab and head of the women’s grievances cell of the university, Noor Afza.

It also spoke to the teachers and the victims separately.
Ugrappa told reporters that the girl students had lodged a sexual abuse complaint against Rajashekar. The complainants alleged that the teacher used to obtain mobile numbers of girls and call them during odd hours. He used to invite the students to his house and would threaten to cut their marks and attendance if they failed to heed his demands, Ugrappa said.

Under suspension

He said he had suggested to the vice chancellor to keep Rajashekar under suspension till the Syndicate Council initiates proceedings against him.

Ugrappa said he had suggested that a police complaint should be lodged by the chief of women's grievances cell or the vice chancellor or the college principal.

Committee members Motamma, K B Shanappa, Prabha, Jyothi, K S Vimala, Karnataka women writers association president Vasundhara Bhupati, Deputy Commissioner K P Mohan Raj were present.
