MNF to go solo in 2018 assembly polls
Aizawl: Former Mizoram chief minister and president of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) Zoramthanga said his party will contest the 2018 state assembly elections without forming any alliance. A press statement issued by MNF on Wednesday quoted Zoramthanga as announcing this in recent public meetings.
He said MNF went alone in the elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) recently and emerged victorious despite the alliance between ruling Congress and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC).
"One-third of the state's population resides in Aizawl," he said, adding that MNF has a good chance of returning to power in 2018.
The MNF, led by Zoramthanga, had ruled the state for a decade since the state assembly polls held in November 1998, but was thrashed by the Congress in the 2008 elections when the former chief minister lost in two constituencies and the Congress bagged 32 seats of the 40-member state assembly.
The party was routed in again 2013 with Zoramthanga failing to enter the state legislature for two consecutive terms. The Congress increased its tally to 34 while MNF bagged 5 seats and its junior partner, MPC, managed to win only one seat.
