Madhur Bhandarkar: 'Chandni Bar Returns' is an interesting idea
March 15 deadline for opening the dance bars set by the Supreme Court is over but Maharashtra government has not completed the formality of giving licences to the bar girls as the applicants have not been able to comply with the conditions vetted by the apex court. Bar girls of Maharashtra, who have won a major battle after facing turbulent times for years, are at a crossroads yet again.
National Award winning director and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, whose film 'Chandni Bar' mirrored the gritty and dark side of dance bars, suggests a way forward in an informal chat.
'Chandni Bar' sequel to go on floors
Supreme Court has shown the path Bhandarkar is quick to state: 'When the Supreme Court ruling came in the favour of bar girls, I was really happy because while doing a detailed research for my film, I have seen the struggle of these girls who are often the sole bread earners of their families. Supreme Court has shown the path and I'm sure an amicable solution will be reached and lights will be on soon in the dance bars. All these girls who have lost their jobs, left their cities and shifted to villages, will stand vindicated and many people will get employment.'
Bar owners have more responsibility Supreme Court ruling states that a gallery has to separate the bar girls and the patrons. Also, the process of showering money on the girls has been barred by the apex court. But till date, none of the bar owners have done much to change their interiors as per the new guidelines. To this, Bhandarkar says: 'Supreme Court has gone in details of the problem and its judgment has to be followed in the right spirit. Hence, the dance bar owners have a greater responsibility. The onus lies on them to ensure that anti-social elements who threaten the law-and-order situation are not allowed to give a bad name to dance bars. I don't know the exact technicalities of the new stipulations, but all the steps must be taken to ensure that safety or dignity of the girls is not compromised. Along with this, the owners must ascertain that dance bars don't become the hub of drunken brawls or a nuisance to neighbourhood. This moment can be turned into a resurrection of dance bars and they must not let go of this opportunity.'
Now a tryst with 'Chandni Bar 2'? Ask him if the return of the dance bars has given him an inspiration to make 'Chandni Bar Returns' and the maverick filmmaker quickly replies: 'There is no such plan as of now. But 'Chandni Bar Returns' has certainly become an interesting idea for sure.'
