Reflecting reality

The members of ‘Playpen’ will present Gurcharan Das’ play, ‘9 Jakhoo Hill’ on March 12, 7.30 pm, at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Malleswaram.

The play explores a number of themes that are relevant, even today, such as a change in values, conflicts between the old and new, family relationships and tension as the skeletons in the cupboard begin to tumble out. It is a power-packed play about a family’s fierce loyalty and love for each other.

The plot is placed in ‘1962 Jakhoo Hill’, Shimla, when China invaded India and shattered the dream of the first Prime Minister. During the Partition, two families, that of a house owner and a tenant migrate to India. The characters and the plot set the play apart.  These characters reflect different structures of social status and values of the contemporary society. Under the facade of respectability, they are dealing with the loss of their insecurities, anger and taboo subjects like incest. Incest, greed and corruption underpin this powerful story.

The play is directed by Ashish Sen and the cast includes Rohn Malhotra, Ameet Bhuvan, Rubi Chakravarti, Munira Sen, Rakhi Bose and Mikhail Sen. Tickets are available at the Deccan Herald office, the venue and bookmyshow.com
