Overloaded truck falls on car, couple escapes unhurt

Ghaziabad: A couple travelling in a car on NH-24 on Tuesday had a narrow escape when a dumper laden with sand overturned after hitting their vehicle. Both vehicles were travelling in the same direction when the accident occurred.
The truckload of sand spilled on the highway near Lal Kuan, missing the car by a few feet. The couple managed to escape unhurt.
No case has been registered in the case as the vehicle owners agreed to settle the matter mutually.
The stretch of the highway where the accident took place falls under the limits of Bisrakh police station in Noida. A Noida PCR rushed to the spot following the accident. Both vehicles and the sand were removed from the road with the help of a crane, while a minor traffic jam ensued on the highway.
"The dumper was travelling from Kavi Nagar towards Delhi, with the car in front of it. The dumper crashed into the car while trying to overtake it, following which the dumper's driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell on the car. Luckily, the entire load of sand fell a few feet behind the car. No one was injured in the accident," said an officer of Noida Police.
Residents of housing societies alongside NH-24 told TOI that trucks overloaded with construction material or other raw and finished goods regularly ply along the highway, posing great risk to commuters.

"Overloaded vehicles pose a great risk to commuters on the highway. Recently, three people were killed in south Delhi, when a sand dumper overturned on a car burying all three alive. Several overloaded vehicles pass through the highway every day right under the nose of police and authorities," said Alok Kumar, president, Federation of Associations of Apartment Owners of Ghaziabad.
Traffic department officials said trucks overloaded with construction material are also found plying along NH-58 and Loni Road. "The traffic department undertakes regular drives to check overloaded vehicles from plying. Drives are also undertaken regularly to penalise violators. The department also ensures spreading awareness about overloaded vehicles on a regular basis," said P P Karnwal, DSP (traffic), Ghaziabad.
