Vohra briefed on panchayat election preparations

Jammu, March 8

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of J&K Shantmanu today briefed Governor NN Vohra and members of the State Administrative Council about the status of preparations for the panchayat and urban local bodies elections at Raj Bhawan in Jammu.

Khurshid A Ganai and Parvez Dewan, advisers to the Governor, Chief Secretary BR Sharma, Financial Commissioner, Planning and Development Department, BB Vyas and Principal Secretary to the Governor PK Tripathi participated in the meeting.

Discussions were held with the CEO about the schedule of the elections to all urban local bodies in the coming months.

The CEO told the meeting that the preparations were well on course for conducting free and fair urban local bodies elections in the state and that the electoral roll would be finalised before March 31.

The Governor noted that holding of timely elections to the urban local bodies would enable the state to derive maximum benefit from the 14th Finance Commission Award which provides about Rs 5,480 crore for the decentralised democratic framework. — TNS
