Catholics threaten to boycott poll

March 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:12 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Catholics residing in Subramaniapuram area here have threatened to boycott the upcoming Assembly elections if the official authorities did not keep up their assurance of constructing a new church at the same spot along the Pudukottai national highway where it was demolished in May last year.

A group of Catholic Christians of the area went to the Collectorate here on Monday and dropped a petition in this regard in the box kept inside. One of the residents of the area claimed that the church “Thooya Sahaya Annai Aaalayam” in Armed Reserve quarters along the Pudukottai national highway was demolished in May 2015.

Following protest, revenue officials held talks and promised to build the church at the same spot, the resident claimed. As steps had not been taken thereafter, the Catholics of Subramaniapuram have decided to boycott the assembly election, the resident said.
