Phogat's song on Jat agitation goes viral
Singer Gajendra Phogat, whose Mata Ka Email song became quite popular, is a resident of Rohtak. After living in a climate of fear for a fortnight because of the Jat agitation in Haryana, Phogat has released a song on the issue, titled Jalta Haryana, on Friday. The song is now being widely circulated via WhatsApp in Haryana.
“I was in Rohtak throughout the protests. I had shows lined up in other cities but I couldn’t step out of my home.
There was so much violence everywhere. Haryana had not seen something like this before. We would keep hearing that ‘their people’ are coming to kill us and ‘our people’ are going to kill them. I was constantly coordinating with the police, the media and my friends from other communities to ensure dissemination of information. Main Jat hoon, par uss waqt koi bhi safe nahi tha. Aaj bhi Rohtak mein situation normal nahi hai,” he says.
Phogat says that he is unhappy with the way actors from the region turned a blind eye towards the riots. “Tweets kaun padh raha hai? Randeep Hooda, Mallika Sherawat, Subhash Ghai, Jaideep Alhawat ko TV aur radio pe aake appeal karni chahiye thi. Darmendra aur Hema Maliniji ambassadors hain Haryana ke. Woh chup rahe. Parineeti Chopra is supposed to inspire women in the state, yet she had nothing to say. Is she not aware of the heinous crimes at Murthal? Amitabh Bachchanji UP se hain. Ek appeal Haryana ke logon se nahi kar sakte the? Meri apne fraternity walon se yeh shikayat hai,” he says.
Phogat believes that his song, which pleads for peace and harmony, was required to fight the climate of hatred. “A Punjabi artiste has given the music of my song. Isn’t that brotherhood?” he asks.
