Kanpur: A girl in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh refused to marry a drunken man who even fell at the marriage venue and rebuked his friends for serving him sub-standard ‘desi’ (locally made liquour). Although the matter was reported to police, no case was filed and the marriage was called off. The incident was reported from Rampur village in Indergarh in Kannauj on Monday where one Sangeeta refused to tie the nuptial knot with Rahul of Athalraha village of Mainpuri district who allegedly arrived at the wedding place in an inebriated condition.
Her parents and family members supported her decision and asked the ‘baraat’ to return.
“Both the parties compromised without any police interference. No FIR was filed from either side and the marriage was called off,” SHO Indergarh Prem Chandra told TOI.
Police said the ‘muhurat’ (auspicious time) for the marriage was scheduled at 9 pm on Monday. Rahul and other ‘baraatis’ arrived the venue in an inebriated condition at 8 pm. Just after Rahul climbed on the stage for ‘jaimaal’ ceremony where Sangeeta was waiting with a ‘jaimaal’, he fell and started abusing his friends and told them why they had served liquor of such cheap ‘desi’ brand, which is making him unable to even stand.
The relatives of the girl tried to control Rahul but he created a scene and misbehaved with Sangeeta's family members, including her parents and other guests, police added.
