You've been a part of the changing eras of Marathi cinema, what do you feel about the transition of Marathi cinema compared to Bollywood?
Marathi cinema was always known for being more realistic than Bollywood movies, but unfortunately; today one cannot make out any difference.
There is so much commercial interference these days that originality is lost. I strongly feel that commercialisation is destroying the Marathi film industry.
What makes you say this?
There is a lot of interference from producers, who are not really aware about the sensibilities of the Marathi film industry. They meddle a lot with the script and it hampers creativity as commercial aspects take over.
Is there interference when it comes to looking a certain way on screen too these days?
Not as much as in Bollywood movies. Men in Marathi film industry are on the bulkier side. I feel that the audience still wants to see them that way. But if they are looking for roles in Hindi cinema, the demand for 'six-pack abs' will be there.
Right from Huma Qureshi to Vidya Balan, many Bollywood actresses are playing important roles in Marathi films, but Marathi actresses mostly play side roles in Hindi cinema'
That's what I want to change. A lot of people in Bollywood complain about the Marathi accent of our actresses, but so many foreign actresses have accents and can't speak Hindi at all. Yet, they are accepted in Bollywood. Why shouldn't our actresses get this chance when they have everything going for them?
