The 5 best Harry Potter-inspired foods (excluding Butterbeer)

Carly Mallenbaum, and Bryan Alexander
USA TODAY

Though Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley tend to gravitate toward the Butterbeer when dining in Hogsmeade's Three Broomsticks, we don't have the appetite for the sweet, frothy drink while dining at the restaurant, which is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood.

So, what's a No-Maj to eat in Hogsmeade?

Actually, a lot of things.

This theme park food is GOOD. (Maybe it was prepared with Helga Hufflepuff's Charms?)

As a public service, we tried every dish at the ancient, antler-filled Three Broomsticks restaurant that's coming to Universal Studios Hollywood's Wizarding World of Harry Potter in April. The new eatery, inspired by the Potter series, expands upon the menu from the restaurant with the same name in Orlando.

Here are the 5 tastiest foods you can eat in Hogsmeade's hangout:

1. Beef Sunday Roast

Beef Sunday Roast, $21.99

It doesn't get any more English than the Beef Sunday Roast, the kind of pink Prime rib slab that Muggles at boarding schools could only dream about. Moist, delicious and slathered in gravy with a side of roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Its magic is even greater in the wintery-Potter setting. Bring your own Christmas lights.

2. Bangers & Mash

Bangers & mash, $12.99

As many Muggles know, bangers and mash means sausage and mashed potatoes. At the Three Broomsticks, the authentic British dish also means TASTY! We can picture the always-eating Ron Weasley stuffing his face with the flavorful sausage and creamy potatoes that are served with tomatoes, onions, cabbage and minted peas, the latter of which is a vegetable combo that we should have known about sooner.

3. Potato Leek Soup

Soup/Salad combo, $9.49

Dumbledore probably eats this silky soup. Because it's good, and we just decided that was the case. Though the obviously-for-vegetarians menu item "Vegetarian Entree" is a solid pick, this dish was especially appealing on the night we sampled it, because it was raining and (relatively) cold outside.

4. Shepherd's Pie with Garden Salad

Shepherd's pie, $12.99

You won't want to wait for rainy days to enjoy the ground beef and vegetables crowned in a crust of mashed potatoes. This is Southern California after all. But it's pretty great to dive into these rich mashed potatoes no matter what the weather.

5. Dessert tie: Apple Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding

Pudding (top middle) is $6.99, and the Apple Pie (to the immediate left of the pudding) is $3.99.

Both the homemade apple pie (with its brown sugar and flaky crust) and the toffee pudding (that comes warm with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice scream) are worth the sugar intake. Skip the Butterbeer for these, Potter fans. (Sorry, we're just really not into Butterbeer.)
