The annual three-day Kathakali festival, ‘Thouryathrikam 2016,’ will be held in the city from February 19 to 21 by Soorya Sopanam Cultural Trust. The event will be held from 6 p.m. at Padmasree Kalyana Mandapam at Tali in the city, the organisers said.
Entry is open to the public and free of charge. The aim is to showcase this art form as much as possible before the public in an area known for rich culture, convenor of the event Beypore Radhakrishnan said.
Events that preceded and followed the Kurukshetra war between the Pandavas and Kauravas, in the Mahabharat, will be presented through Kathakali performances by famous exponents from Kalamandalam. One of the events from the Mahabharat, wherein Arjun is on a mission to obtain the Pasupatha Asthra from Lord Shiva will be brought out through a performance by retired Principal of Kalamandalam Balasubramanian.
How Lord Krishna as a child gives moksha to Puthana, who wanted to kill him, will be another episode that would unfurl on the stage.
Not many people know of these episodes from mythology. The effort is also to bring out the beauty of Kathakali by choosing it as a form or mode of narration. To easily understand what is being depicted on the stage, the audience will be given in printed form the entire story, he said.
