Palmeiras were twice pegged back by Uruguay's River Plate as they opened the Copa Libertadores group stages on Tuesday.

River, who were playing at their Domingo Burgueno Miguel stadium home in Maldonado, fell behind after Palmeiras midfielder Jean converted a Dudu delivery on 35 minutes.

After the break the Uruguyan's hit back, when Michael Santos stepped up to convert a penalty after Palmeiras goalie Fernando Prass brought down Schiappacasse in the area.

However, Palmeiras' young prospect Gabriel Jesus scored to retake the lead in the 58th minute following some good combinination work with Alecsandro.

And just six minutes later River showed great belief to claw back an equalizer courtesy of Bruno Montelongo to earn a point in Group 2.

Elsewhere, goals from Yuber Mosquera and Edgar Perez secured a narrow 2-1 victory for Deportivo Tachira against Olimpia in Group 7, while Santa Fe were held to a goalless draw by Cerro Porteno in Group 8.
