Congratulations on your graduation, wife told David Headley after 26/11

"Janoo, I studied hard to get good grades," said terror-accused-turned approver David Headley in an email to his wife Shazia, two days after the deadly Mumbai attack.

On November 26, 2008, after seeing the coverage of the attack on TV, Headley's first wife Shazia wrote to him from Chicago, "Congratulations on your graduation ceremony, you did great." This, he explained in his testimony to the court, was in a way giving the entire credit of the success of Mumbai attack to him.

Headley received this praise because among all Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives and leaders, he was the one who surveyed the attack targets, secured a safe landing place for the attackers and also tried to give them a cover in different forms.

In order to make the 10 attackers look Hindu, Headley purchased 10 red and yellow wrist bands. He then tested an Indian mobile phone, which was given to the attackers at the Wagha border. This phone was used by LeT operatives to communicate with the attackers and guide them throughout the operation.

During his deposition on Friday, Headley also gave details about how the LeT had decided to use the stronghold method of attack, where the attackers would not move out of the target and fight until the end with the forces. This was chosen over the ingress way of attack, because according to LeT operative Sajid Mir, when the attackers have to keep on moving, they don't fight well.

Headley was in Lahore at the time of the Mumbai attack, and also when he came to know about the arrest of terrorist Ajmal Kasab, whose picture he identified in the court. He informed the court that LeT operative Mir and others were saddened on hearing the news.

Headley, who is deposing from an undisclosed location in the US, also mentioned about having purchased books on India Army and Jews in India on his visit to Mumbai before the attack. He claimed he had several books about the Indian Army at his house and it was a subject of his interest.
