Lift irrigation scheme to be named after Bhakta Ramdas

February 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao has asked the irrigation officials to immediately issue a government order naming the lift irrigation project at Paler in Khammam district after saint-poet Bhakta Ramdas and that the integrated Rajivsagar – Indirasagar project at Dummugudem be renamed as Sitarama project. The decision to rename the Rajivsagar– Indirasagar project invited criticism from the Congress with its working president of Telangana unit, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, writing a letter to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao complaining that the name change was done out of political vendetta because they were sanctioned by the previous government. It also amounted to insulting the great leaders in whose names the projects were conceived.

The names were finalised at a meeting presided over by Mr. Harish Rao to discuss the progress of the irrigation projects in the State. He asked senior officials to cut down non-plan expenditure when they prepare budget proposals of the department for the next year. With a budget of Rs. 25,000 crore, the allocation for irrigation sector will be significant.
