Toronto-born rapper Drake now holds a key to "the Six," after being handed the token at a star-studded NBA All-Star event.
After receiving the honour, Drake went on to coach the Canadian All-Star celebrity squad to a 74-64 win over team U.S.A.
Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler earned the most valuable player award for leading his side to victory over comedian-turned-coach Kevin Hart’s team. Hart – a four-time All-Star celebrity game MVP – failed to mount a comeback despite donning a jersey and entering the game in the second half.
Drake was given the key to the city on Friday by Toronto Mayor John Tory, who called it the "highest honour we can give."
The presentation brought to life the lyrics from Drake's song "Summer Sixteen," the lead single from his upcoming Toronto-themed "Views From The 6" album.
"Soon as I'm back in the city they throw a parade. I might get a key to the city and give it to Wayne, or give it to one of the young boys to carry the wave," Drake says in the song.
Before the presentation, Tory tweeted a photo of the key with the caption, "I'll tell him he can't give it to Wayne.”
Tory said he believes the key to the city should be given to those who make residents feel good about themselves and Toronto. He noted Drake's contributions to the city both through his music and charity.
Drake founded OVO Fest, an annual music festival held in the city every summer. He also serves as the global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors.
In addition to drawing attention to the city, Drake has been involved in several charitable activities that promote the city's music industry and address social issues felt by Toronto youth.
"This is probably one of the biggest moments of my life -- if not the biggest moment of my life," Drake said as he accepted the key.
"I feel like I have a new purpose, a new goal."
Previous recipients of the key include the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Atwood and Celine Dion. Former Toronto Blue Jays CEO Paul Beeston will be presented with a key in the spring.
