Rae Bareli: On the second day of her two-day tour of Rae Bareli, Congress president Sonia Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his statement, 'Naa khaayenge, naa khaane denge' was contrary to the "reality and his intention". Asking workers to gear up for the coming MLC elections in the state, and to ensure victory of party nominee Dinesh Singh, Sonia Gandhi also held meetings with members and office bearers of 11 frontal organisations of the party including the Youth Congress, NSUI, Sewa Dal, among others.
Before heading back to New Delhi, Sonia met a group of Congress leaders from Kanpur. Harprakash Agnihotri, president of City Congress Committee, said the delegation requested her, or Rahul Gandhi, to visit Kanpur either on April 14 (the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar) or on May 1 (labour Day) to galvanise voters. "The party men were also of the opinion that Kanpur was crucial in revamping the fortunes of the party in 1977 and 1989 and it might spring another surprise in future polls," he said.
Sonia's cavalcade also had a minor run-in with the SPG, when a differently-abled boy who met the Congress president made a sudden appearance in front of her SUV and had to be removed from in front of the vehicle by SPG. Some unpleasant scenes were also witnessed outside guest house where Sonia Gandhi was staying when a group of women from adjoining villages who wanted to meet Sonia were denied entry by Congressmen.
