YABATECH shut as students protest eviction notice
Accusations and counter-accusations continued yesterday between students and management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) over the death of a final-year Office Technology Management, HND II student, Miss Dazan Charity Oluwabukola.
While the student, who died on Wednesday has since been buried, the institution was yesterday shut down for four weeks. This was contained in a circular issued by the school’s spokesman, Mr. Charles Oni, announcing a four-week day of mourning, directing all students to leave campus before noon yesterday.
Management’s decision to shut down the college caused another chaos yesterday as students refused to vacate the premises, thereby locking the two main entrances of the college, as the protest entered the second day.
A student, who did not want his name in print said: “We started another protest this morning due to the news we received that Danzan lost her mother, who was suffering from partial stroke. We are also protesting management’s directive that we vacate the halls of residence before noon.
“Oluwabukola would have been the best graduating students. She had 3.97 CGPA, the best result YABATECH has ever produced. And her family lost her due to management’s negligence when she was sick.”
When The Guardian visited Oni in his office, he frowned at the attitude of students, blaming poor parentage and the society for the shortcomings.
“The academic board of YABATECH has suspended academic activities in the college for four weeks to allow management, staff and students mourn the loss of late Danzan and to forestall further destruction of college property.
