A 48-year-old woman with dilated cardiomyopathy — an end-stage heart disease — got a new lease of life after the family of a 50-year-old brain dead woman agreed to donate her heart. The donor had met with a train accident on February 6.

According to her family, she fell from the train near Nallasopara after which the railway police admitted her to a local hospital in an unconscious state. When her condition didn't improve, the hospital indicated that she may be brain dead. A family friend — who had donated organs of his wife — suggested them for organ donation and contacted Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee.

"She was shifted to Jupiter Hospital on February 8 where we conducted the apnoea and other confirmatory tests for brain dead people. The brother of the donor gave consent for donating her liver, heart, kidneys and corneas," said Aniruddh Kulkarni, the transplant coordinator at Jupiter hospital. While one kidney and liver went to patients at Jupiter Hospital, the second kidney was transplanted to an end-stage kidney patient at Bombay Hospital. "The liver was transplanted to an 80-year-old man who had end stage liver disease," said a ZTCC official.

A green corridor was created that allowed the doctors to transport the heart from Jupiter Hospital to Fortis in flat eight minutes. At around 4am, the control room of Thane traffic police got a call from Jupiter Hospital.

"They informed us that they will be taking a live heart of a 50-year-old woman to Fortis, Mulund for transplant. The official on night duty immediately informed Dr Rashmi Karandikar, deputy commissioner of police, Thane traffic police," said a traffic department official.

Under Karandikar's guidance a plan was formulated whereby the traffic police ensured the way for the ambulance will be free of traffic. ACP PV Matadhikari removed all the heavy vehicles on the road from Jupiter Hospital to Anandnagar check naka. Since there are not many officials on night duty, more staff was called in to ensure that the transportation took place without any obstacle.

This is also the 10th heart transplant since August which includes two paediatric heart transplants. After seeing a rough patch in the last few years, Mumbai made history with 100% rise in cadaver donation in 2014 with 41 cadaver donations. However, in 2015, the city saw only 42 cadaver donations, which was way below the ZTCC's expectation.
