Activists of the Communist Party of India, Karimnagar district unit, staged a massive dharna in front of the Collectorate office here on Wednesday demanding the government, among others, to declare drought in the entire Karimnagar district.

CPI activists arrived in a procession from Arts College grounds to the Collectorate office and staged a dharna. CPI State secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, district secretary K. Ramgopal Reddy, town secretary B. Ashok, and others participated in the dharna. Mild commotion prevailed when the activists tried to gate crash into the Collectorate premises.

However, the police foiled their attempt. Following the protest, Additional Joint Collector A. Nagendra went at the agitation camp and received a memorandum submitted by the protestors. The CPI leaders demanded the government provide 200 days of employment under NREGS programme to the all labourers and provide wages of Rs. 300 per day.

They also sought three acres of land to all Dalits, double-bedroom houses to all eligible persons, distribution of water through tankers in the rural areas, etc.
