LED walls, touchscreens to give passengers information

High resolution LED walls and display boards, coach and platform indication boards, and touchscreens figure on the list of passenger amenities to be rolled out by Railways in the State on Friday.

Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, who will be arriving here for the first time since assuming charge, will inaugurate the facilities at the Thiruvananthapuram Central station.

The LED walls and display boards with high pixel density, which will be set up in 19 stations, will flash train arrivals, departure, platform numbers, and parking facilities in Malayalam, Hindi, and English. The facility will be installed outside the station building.

At Thiruvananthapuram Central, 11 LED walls measuring 30 ft x 7ft, 120 coach indication boards, 80 platform indication boards, and eight touchscreens will be installed. the facilities will be available at the Kuzhithurai, Kanyakumary, Nagercoil, Kochuveli, Kazhakuttam, Varkala, Kollam, Kayamkulam, Alappuzha, Thiruvalla, Chengannur, Changanassery, Kottayam, Ernakulam Town and Junction, Aluva, Thrissur, and Guruvayur stations. The LED walls in the 19 stations will fetch Rs.36 lakh annually for five years through adverts, Sunil Bajpai said here.

Mr. Prabhu will inaugurate a booking office with more queuing area and 12 counters. The elevator to link platforms four and five and a foot overbridge from the Nagercoil end to link all platforms will also be commissioned.

Facility for short-time parking, which will be managed by Kudumbasree, will become operational. A pre-paid taxi service will also be rolled out from the new parking lot. Mr. Prabhu will lay the foundation stone for the Rs.3.77-crore 60-bed running room to provide three-star accommodation for train crew at the second entry on Power House road here.

Through video-conferencing, the Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Rs.7.5-crore second entry to Kollam junction. A new booking office, FOB to link all platforms and new parking area are part of the project for which Rs.2 crore has been provided as State’s share.

The solid state interlocking system at Ernakulam Junction, the broad gauge line between Palakkad and Pollachi and escalator and two elevators at Palakkad Junction will also be dedicated to the nation through video-conferencing.
