No end to Warangal woman’s ordeal

February 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - WARDHANNAPET (WARANGAL DIST):

The ordeal of hapless woman Bhanoth Anitha continued as she was forced to terminate her pregnancy due to severe injuries. She was brutally beaten up by her husband’s first wife Swaroopa and her relatives the other day. Following physical assault, the baby died in the womb at Government Maternity Hospital, Hanamkonda.

Collector Vakati Karuna and Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu called on her late last night at the hospital and assured her of all support.

A police picket had been set up and patrolling intensified in Donga Chintha thanda and in surrounding hamlets where she was abused and assaulted on Monday.

Bhanoth Anitha had to face the fury of relatives of her husband Bhanot Ravi too for marrying him despite knowing the fact that he was already married.

Relatives of Swaroopa held a panchayat at the hamlet on Monday morning where her relatives beat up Ravi, who approached a police station immediately.

Meanwhile they caught hold of Anitha and treated her very badly - tore her clothes and beat her up with a burning log.

On Tuesday, Mr. Sudheer Babu visited the hamlet and held a meeting with the habitants. He asked them to approach police station if they have any dispute, rather than taking law in their hands. He said that the department would open rowdy sheet on all the accused in the case.

Speaking to The Hindu , he said six of the nine accused were arrested and sent to judicial remand, while the remaining are still at large. The habitation has more number of youth who are into auto-driving and allegedly lead a wayward life, often leading to law and order problems.

Mr. Sudheer Babu said the department has decided to adopt Donga Chintha Thanda, where a library would be opened soon. The police would also help the youth look for alternate vocations in the long run, he said.

The Commissioner urged the residents to strive to change the image of the hamlet, be united, and restrain themselves from indulging in unlawful activities.

Meanwhile, Anitha, who suffered 15 per cent of burn injuries, was stated to be out of danger.

The Commissioner said that the victim was not stripped and paraded as being reported but was manhandled badly by the accused.

The arrested in the case are: B. Swaroopa, M. Hemla, M. Badri, M. Sailu, M. Mahesh and M. Bujji. The absconding are: B Kamalamma, B Vijay and M Sali.

The thanda has been in news several times. During the last general elections, the police had to open fire to disperse the warring mobs, while during the previous elections, the inhabitants refused to vote demanding the district Collector to come and promise a road and drinking water facilities.
