Woman dies in freak mishap, saves 4 lives

A 50-year-old woman, who died after falling from the stairs at Nalasopara Railway Station, has given a new lease of life to four critically ailing patients.

Dina Shah, a resident of Nalasopara, met with the accident on Saturday, and passed away three days later. Her family decided to donate her heart, liver and kidneys, which rescued a 48-year-old woman who was awaiting a heart transplant at Fortis Hospital, an 80-year-old man awaiting a liver transplant, and two young women suffering from end-stage kidney disease.

The accident

Shah slipped and fell from the stairs on Saturday afternoon, after which she was rushed to the nearby Alliance Hospital in Nalasopara. Her condition deteriorated and she was assessed to have had a severe brain damage that was irreversible.

She was shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where the doctors declared her brain dead. “In our community, donating organs is the highest form of good deed. I told her family about it and they agreed,” said Paresh Shah, a family friend, adding Shah lived with her elder brother in Nalasopara.

Last month, a Jain family from Sydney had donated the organs of their seven-year-old son, who died due to a clot in the brain.
