Floyd Mayweather is my joker in the pack, says Ashley Theophane

Ashley Theophane believes Floyd Mayweather Jr's input will ensure the joke is on Adrien Broner when they meet for the WBA world light-welterweight title on April Fool's Day.

Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KOs) expects to face Broner (31-2, 23 KOs), possibly in Atlantic City, on April 1 after his promoter Mayweather landed him his first world title shot at the age of 35.

Mayweather, 38, insists he will not be resuming his boxing career after out-pointing Andre Berto to take his record to 49-0 in September and is now concentrating on promoting his stable of fighters, which includes Las Vegas-based Londoner Theophane.

Despite Mayweather's previous friendship with fellow American Broner, Theophane says 'Money' will be firmly in his corner on fight night.

"I'm very sure that Floyd is going to give me advice on what I should do against Broner and he should be giving me instructions during the fight as well," Theophane told ESPN. "Broner likes to use the shoulder roll like Floyd. I've sparred with Floyd five or six times so I know how to deal with that and Floyd believes that I can fight Broner the same way in the ring."

Broner, a world champion in four weight classes, has lost to Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter since 2013, but got his career back on track by claiming the vacant WBA belt with a 12th round stoppage victory over Khabib Allakhverdiev in October.

The Cincinnati boxer has called Theophany "easy money" for a first defence but Theophane insists his trash talk will not bother him.

"He [Broner] has been putting stuff up on social media about me and I find him entertaining. I'm 35 and he won't be able to get under my skin. I'm used to people talking like him because I've been in America for a while now," Theophane said.

Theophane flew back to Vegas on Wednesday after accompanying five-weight world champion Mayweather to an event at a London hotel earlier this week.

"I went to an event in London with him and he said some great stuff about me which is great motivation. It's great that he believes in me," Theophane said. "He's saying right now he's achieved his goals and he's just touring the world and making sure his fighters are getting the best opportunities, and that's great for us.

"A week before his final fight he told me I would be fighting for the world title and he kept to his word. I went 10 years without a promoter and when I did get a promoter it was Floyd Mayweather Jr, the best boxer of our generation.

"I've been training with Dave Brown at the All Stars Gym in London and over in Vegas I will be working with Nate Jones. There are four guys who will help me and Floyd's dad has said he wants to help me win as well."
