LG reveals that the G5 will feature an Always On display

There are only eleven days to go before LG unveils its flagship G5 smartphone to the world on the eve of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As is usually the case before the launch of a new device, there have been several leaks regarding the G5’s specifications, including its rumored accessory slot and revamped design, but the latest reveal comes straight from LG mobile’s own Facebook page: the G5 will have an “always on” display.

This obviously doesn’t mean that the G5’s regular display will always be on; instead, the new feature is said to be similar to the LG V10’s smaller secondary display, only this will be a full-screen version.

We don’t know the full extent of the Always On screen’s functions, but the images show that it can display the time and date, as well as a series of notification icons. It’s been suggested that the feature will be an improvement over the V10 version as it could potentially use colors and have more customization options.

The question on most people’s lips will be how much battery life this Always On screen will eat up. While OLED screens save power when only certain parts of the screen are used, Android Authority claims to have heard that the G5 will be using LCD rather than OLED.

Interestingly, Samsung is trying to trademark the phrase “Always On Display,” suggesting that its upcoming S7 will have a very similar feature to the G5. The difference being that Samsung’s flagship uses an AMOLED display, meaning it should outperform the G5 when it comes to battery life.

We’ll have to wait until Sunday, February 21 to find out more about this feature and whether LG is sticking with its preferred IPS LCD screen or moving to OLED for the sake of battery performance. There may even be a chance that the G5 will follow in the footsteps of the YotaPhone 2 and have its Always On display located on the back of the device.

Not sure how an Always On screen would be a good idea. I use my G4 as my alarm clock next to my bed. I don't want any light showing.
