Glen’s goal

Bagan forward vows ruthless champions will attack Mumbai.

It is often said that what separates confidence from an excess of it is a proverbial thin line. So when Mohun Bagan forward Cornell Glen boasts that his team is ‘good enough to beat anyone’, is he in danger of crossing that line?

No need to raise an eyebrow… just yet.

There is no reason to doubt Bagan’s credentials. The champions are unbeaten in their opening four games and have an impressive scoring rate of over two goals per match (10 goals in 4 matches).

The Kolkata giants are currently in third place and have scored only one goal lesser than top-placed East Bengal despite having played three fewer games.

Mumbai FC’s defence will be put to the sword by Glen and his teammates tonight. Indian Super League sensation Sony Norde and Jeje Lalpekhlua will aid the red hot Glen, who has scored four goals in four I-League games and was also on target in the historic 3-1 win over Singapore’s Tampines Rovers that made Bagan the first Indian club to win an AFC Champions League qualifier.

Due to visa-related problems, Glen was unavailable for the 0-6 loss against China’s Shandong Luneng in the next AFC tie.

Mumbai FC, meanwhile, churned out two draws, won two and lost one – garnering a reputation of a stingy defensive unit along the way. Mumbai have conceded only two goals in five games and they have a tendency of shutting shop in the second half or after scoring a goal.

Glen has vowed to take the game to Khalid Jamil’s men.

“We will attack them,” Glen casually announced with an assured confidence.

“We just expect to win and get the three points on the day,” added the 35-yearold Trinidad and Tobago World Cupper.

“We need to win. They have a good defence and attack too. But we will play attacking football. It is going to be an interesting game,” Glen told Mirror.

Mumbai look very comfortable at home this season. They are unbeaten at Cooperage with a draw against East Bengal and wins over Salgaocar and runners-up Bengaluru FC.

Nevertheless, Glen, who scored 16 ILeague goals for Shillong Lajong last season, has promised to be ruthless tonight. “Mumbai are tough to beat at home. But with Shillong Lajong, I won 6-0 over here last year. We are a good enough team to beat anyone,” he signed off.
