India will do well in singles in near future: Bartoli

India has not produced any singles player of note since the days of Vijay Amritraj and Ramesh Krishnan, but former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli ( above ) is confident that the country is on the right path and will start doing well in the near future.

“India is on the right path, you need to have patience. It is very difficult to do well in singles because it is very, very competitive. India is doing everything to move in the right direction,” she said.IANS

Cilic, Dodig advance in Rotterdam

 Second-seeded Marin Cilic ( below ) of Croatia had 10 aces in a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the first round of the World Tennis Tournament on Monday. Istomin saved six break-point chances in the second set, but conceded the only break as Cilic got on top. Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, did not face a single break-point in the match. Countryman Ivan Dodig joins Cilic in the next round after beating seventh-seeded Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 7-6 (4). AP

Slumping Knicks sack head coach Fisher 

The slumping New York Knicks sacked Derek Fisher ( above ) on Monday, promoting Kurt Rambis to the job of interim head coach in a bid to reverse their sagging NBA fortunes.

“It’s time for us to make a change, turn this team around and move forward,” Knicks President Phil Jackson said on Monday afternoon, hours after the team confirmed the move in a statement posted on its website.

Fisher finishes his Knicks coaching career with an overall record of 40-96.AFP

Messi undergoes kidney stone treatment 

Lionel Messi ( below ) is undergoing treatment on kidney stones which floored the Argentina superstar at the Club World Cup in December, Barcelona announced on Monday.

The five-time world Player of the Year “will be submitted to various tests on Monday and Tuesday to assess the development of kidney problems he suffered last December”, the Spanish champions said in a statement.

Messi is due back on Wednesday, when Barca face Valencia in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg.AFP

Zouma ruled out for six months 

Chelsea and France defender Kurt Zouma ( above ) will have surgery this week on a knee injury set to rule him out for the rest of the season and Euro 2016, the Premier League club revealed on Monday.

Zouma injured his anterior cruciate ligament in Chelsea’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The 21-year-old centre-back landed awkwardly early in the second half and was taken off on a stretcher.AFP

Ranchi Rays emerge victorious against Kalinga Lancers

Defending champions Ranchi Rays came from behind to eke out a 3-2 victory over Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League (HIL) here on Monday. With this win Ranchi Rays go top of the table with 27 points.

Mohammad Amir Khan scored the winner in the 49th minute with a field goal, counted as two in this edition of HIL. Lancers took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with Dharamvir Singh's tap-in before Ashley Jackson ( below left ) reduced the difference to one with a successful penalty corner conversion. Agencies

Isinbayeva to miss indoor season with leg injury: coach 

Russian pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva ( left below ) will miss the remainder of the indoor season after tearing a muscle in her left leg at the weekend, her coach Yevgeny Trofimov ( right below ) said on Monday.

“The medics have put her left leg in a plaster cast. Now it’s obvious that she will have to miss the remainder of the indoor season,” Trofimov said.AFP
