New NHIF chief as Kirgotty’s term runs out

National Hospital Insurance Fund CEO Simeon ole Kirgotty has been replaced after his first term in office expired at the public health insurer.

Geoffrey Gitau, the Fund’s finance and investments manager, has been appointed acting CEO.

The changes were communicated yesterday in a letter sent by NHIF chairman Mohamud Ali.

The letter said Mwangi started acting from yesterday.

“I am pleased to convey the decision that you have been appointed to the position of chief executive officer in an acting capacity with effect from February 9 until further notice,” the letter said.

The Fund chairman and outgoing CEO could not be reached on the phone for comment.

Other managers declined to comment, saying it is a personnel matter.

Kirgotty, a former director of administration at then Ministry of Medical Services, took over at NHIF from Adan Mohammed in August 2012.

There were reports the government did not renew his contract over claims he is sympathetic to Cord because.

He was appointed by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o when he was Medical Services minister.

Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli last week threatened to pull out the trade union’s members from the Fund following the government’s decision not to renew Kirgotty’s contract.
