Several Congress leaders, including Shivamogga MLA K.B. Prasanna Kumar, chairman of Shivamogga Urban Development Authority N. Ramesh, Mayor of Shivamogga City Corporation S.K. Mariyappa, campaigned for Mailarappa, party candidate for the forthcoming zilla panchayat elections from Holalur constituency, on Tuesday.

Mr. Mailarappa, a former ZP president, has crossed swords with K.E. Kanthesh, son of Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, K.S. Eshwarappa, who is the BJP candidate from Holalur.

Speaking to presspersons after campaigning, Mr. Prasanna Kumar expressed confidence of Mr. Mailarappa’s victory.

He charged that though Mr. Kanthesh is a resident of Shivamogga city, the BJP has fielded him from Holalur.

“The BJP candidate is ignorant of the problems faced by the farmers in rural areas… voters will reject him,” he added.

The farmers in the region would benefit from the modernisation of Tunga canal, he said and added that it was unfortunate that Mr. Eshwarappa tried to hamper the work citing ‘absurd’ reasons.

“The people will teach Mr. Eshwarappa a lesson for his misadventure by defeating his son in the elections,” he added.
