Coldplay Vs. Beyonce Vs. Bruno: Which Halftime Show Star Won Sales And Social After The Super Bowl

This article is more than 8 years old.

"I used to rule the world; seas would rise when I gave the word," Coldplay's Chris Martin sang at the beginning of the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show on Sunday. On the morning after, he could now change those lyrics to "Coldplay rules the charts; sales rose when I sang those words."

Although Beyoncé dominated buzz on Twitter with her guest appearance, headliner Coldplay is faring better in post-show sales on iTunes top 200 songs chart, according to data Forbes compiled: As of 7 a.m. PT, after an estimated more than 100 million people watched the halftime show, Coldplay has 11 songs charting with "Adventure of a Lifetime" at No. 2, "Viva la Vida" at 8, "Paradise" at 10, "A Sky Full of Stars" at 26, "Fix You" at 30, "Hymm for the Weekend" at 33, "Clocks" at 38, "Yellow" at 50, "The Scientist" at 87, "Up&Up" at 156, and "Speed of Sound" at 172.

Meanwhile, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' “Uptown Funk” soared to No. 16, while Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” is locked at 161. Six Beyoncé songs are charting with "Run the World (Girls)" at 48, "Love On Top" at 134, "Crazy In Love" at 138, "Partition" at 168, "Halo" at 192, and "7/11" at 194. Absent from the chart is Beyoncé's new surprise single “Formation,” which she released one day before Super Bowl Sunday as an exclusive on Tidal. It will eventually become available on iTunes. Beyoncé also announced her Formation World Tour after the show.

In comparison, last year's halftime show incited a similar sales spike -- headliner Katy Perry also had 11 songs in the iTunes top 200, while guest Missy Elliott had eight.

This year's performers are expected to see a spike on streaming services, too. Forbes contacted Spotify and Apple Music for stats and will update this post once those services provide numbers. Last year, Missy Elliott's Spotify streams spiked an eye-popping 676% in the hours following the Super Bowl.

Beyoncé claimed the crown as far as tweets.

Between 8:29 p.m. ET and 8:52 ET, the halftime show attracted 3.9 million tweets globally, according to stats Twitter provided to ForbesBeyoncé attracted 1.3 million mentions, Coldplay netted 774,000 shout-outs and Mars raked in 341,000 namedrops. The top-tweeted songs were "Formation," "Uptown Funk," "Paradise" and "Viva la Vida." Beyoncé fans tweeted these words the most: "tour, queen, formation, waiting, life, slay." Coldplay-related tweets were filled with "love, iconic, compared, good." And Mars' references included "dance, good, god, battle, Mark Ronson." Among the celebrities helping elevate the Twitter buzz were Taylor Swift, Madonna, MC Hammer, Demi Lovato and more.

On Facebook, Coldplay received the most interactions (posts, comments and likes) with 6 million people completing 9.3 million interactions, compared to 8.8 million Beyoncé interactions from 5.2 million people and 5.3 million Mars interactions from 3.8 million people.

After every Super Bowl halftime show and other major music events like the Grammy Awards, artists routinely see spikes in sales and streams. Last year, 118.5 million viewers watched Perry's halftime show, the most-viewed halftime show ever. Viewership numbers are not yet available for Coldplay's halftime show.
