Ex-presidential candidate calls for 'conditional' lifting sanctions on Belarus officials

If the Belarusian authorities want the EU sanctions to be lifted, they should take decisive steps, the leaders of the civil campaign ‘Tell the Truth’ said.

“On a fisrt-priority basis, the article allowing the persecution of activists who ‘act on behalf of an unregistered organization’ (Article 193.1) should be removed,” the 2015 presidential candidate Tatsiana Karatkevich told Belsat TV.

According to Karatkevich, Belarus needs financial and technical assistance which could be provided [by the West] after the removal of sanctions.

“These sanctions have been in effect a long time. We see that over the past ten years we have become poor, our economy and politics are going to zero. This means that [the government’s] tactics and policy work neither at home nor abroad. Therefore, we believe that a change of tactics and strategy towards Belarus could open up new opportunities for us,” she added.

On Monday, activist Volha Karach blasted Tatsiana Karatkevich, calling the campaign ‘Tell the Truth’ the main lobbyist of Lukashenka among Belarusian opposition.

As reported earlier, the Belarus issue is on the agenda of a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the European Union scheduled for February 15.
