The current European Ryder Cup rankings

Danny Willett's one-shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic not only moved the 28-year-old to a new career-high of 13th in the world rankings, but also lifted him up to third in the European Points List standings.

World No 2 Rory McIlroy still leads the way after following last year's DP World Tour Championship with two top-six finishes in the Desert, although he has seen his advantage cut to just over 100,000 having failed to defend his title at the Emirates GC.

Andy Sullivan would have topped the standings with victory last week, but a tie for second alongside Rafa Cabrera-Bello parachutes him to the second of four automatic qualification places.

A tied-45th finish in Dubai sees Matt Fitzpatrick drop to fourth, with Turkish Airlines Open champion Victor Dubuisson lurking less than 7,000 points behind despite not featuring this week.

Cabrera-Bello's fast start to the season has seen the Spaniard rise to world No 61, with back-to-back tied-second finishes in Qatar and Dubai lifting him to 16th in the standings.

Chris Wood is up to sixth having bounced back from back-to-back missed cuts to finish in the top-10 last week, while Henrik Stenson extended his advantage at the top of the world points list by ending in the top-six for the third start running.

How the Ryder Cup qualification process works

Wood, Justin Rose, Kristoffer Broberg, Thorbjorn Olesen and Thomas Pieters currently complete the group of players who would qualify, as things stand, through the world points list.

The top four members on the European Points list at the end of August 2016 will automatically secure their spots for Hazeltine, as will the five players not already in the side who have won the highest number of OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings) points over the same time period.
