MUMBAI: Shortly before the Maharashtra BJP government announced a prime plot for actress Hema Malini, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla was perhaps the only one to have returned his land after a controversy broke out over the allotment.
TOI featured a story on Saturday showing how leading artistes like Hariprasad Chaurasia and Suresh Wadkar have misused large plots given to them for music gurukuls.
The land was granted for petty amounts by previous state governments. Wadkar has commercialised his land by opening three wedding halls, a sound recording studio and has in fact sublet an entire building to Billabong school.
Meanwhile Chaurasia's "gurukul" does not have a single teacher and is practically used as the family's holiday home.
An indignant Shukla said, ""Where are all those activists who raised such a hue and cry about my allotment? All those who took a moral high ground, why are they silent now? I had got my land in a legal way under legitimate provisions. Nobody did me a favour or made concessions.'"
Shukla said, "Several politicians irrespective of party affiliation who were granted government land have opened educational institutes without anybody raising an eyebrow. Why was I singled out? I feel that all those who are flouting the rules, their allotments should be cancelled."
Shukla said he had incurred losses of up to Rs 6 crore on his plot. "I paid Rs 2 crore by cheque to the state government and spent Rs 4 crore to clean and sanitise the plot, remove encroachments and secure the space. I have yet to recover that amount and I have lost my land as well."
