Nigerian Navy foils pirate attack on cargo ship

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Abuja, Rabi'II 28, 1437, February 07, 2016, SPA - The Nigerian Navy has foiled an attempt by suspected pirates to hijack a Singapore-registered cargo ship with 25 crew, the navy said Sunday, according to dpa. MS Safmarine Kuramo, which was transporting "general cargo" from Congo, was attacked after entering Nigerian territorial waters on January 5, navy representative Olusegun Soyemi said. The pirates fired at the ship several times and boarded it while the crew was hiding in the engine room. The ship's female captain solved the situation by communicating with the navy, Soyemi said. The navy sent a warship and gunboats, the sight of which made the pirates flee. No one was injured in the incident, Soyemi said. -SPA 00:17 LOCAL TIME 21:17 GMT
