Chennai gets 65 more small buses
CHENNAI: As many as 65 new small buses have been introduced in Chennai. These buses, which were flagged off by chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday, will ply on 30 new routes.
Two of them will be added to two existing routes. The length of their trips range from 4.1kms (Avadi bus stand to Chiranjeevi Nagar) to 11kms (from Chromepet to Jothi Nagar).

All routes will have two buses plying in tandem except route no S82 (from Alandur metro station to Foreshore Estate) which will have three buses plying.
Like in the case of previous routes, most of the new routes for small buses seem to be focused on southern suburbs like Chromepet, Tambaram and Medavakkam. Within the city, areas like Velachery, Ramapuram, Ashok Pillar, K K Nagar, Nungambakkam, Alandur, T Nagar and Nesapakkam have been covered.
For the north, small buses will ply to Ayanavaram and Korattur. In the west, places like Avadi, Thirumullaivoyal and Moolakadai have been taken care off.
Existing small bus routes from Ashok Pillar to Valasaravakkam (S26) and from Vadapalani to Koyambedu (S31) have been given an additional bus each. In total, Chennai has 165 small buses plying on 70 routes.
Small buses act like feeder services and cater to unconnected parts of the city – where bigger buses and metro rail systems are possible.
During the last launch of small buses, in 2014, areas like Tambaram, Pallavaram, Thiruvanmiyur, Besant Nagar, Adyar, Guindy and Mandaveli in the south and Villivakkam, Korattur, Perambur, Valasaravakkam in the north and north-western parts of the city were covered.
