A man, suspected to be a thief, was tied to an electric pole and lynched by a mob in Moti Banugar village, about 18km from Jamnagar town, on Friday late night.

Rajkot: A man, suspected to be a thief, was tied to an electric pole and lynched by a mob in Moti Banugar village, about 18km from Jamnagar town, on Friday late night.
Police have detained persons from the village and booked them for murder. However, the deceased remains to be identified.
According to police, the incident took place around midnight when a man aged 25-30 years walked into Moti Banugar village.
Some youths and men suspected him to be a thief and apprehended him.
Police said that the mob tied the man to an electricity pole in the village and beat him with sticks. Source said that they continued to hit him for nearly two hours leading to his death.
When villager sarpanch Jayantilal Bhensdadiya (53) came to know about the incident he called the 108 emergency service and the police. The paramedics arrive and declared the man dead.
Bhensdadiya later lodged FIR against 19 persons, who were booked under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (present on the crime scene) of the Indian Penal Code. "All the accused have been detained for questioning," said police sub-inspector M D Chaudhary said.

Instances of angry mob taking law in their own hands have become frequent in the state.
On January 27, an unidentified youth was lynched by a mob in Dindoli area of Surat after he was allegedly caught stealing a mobile phone by locals. The youth was tied to an electric pole by locals who thrashed him with wooden logs.
Another lynching incident was reported in August last year from Amalsad village in Navsari district. A group of villagers allegedly beat up a 40-year-old man to death after he was allegedly caught sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl.
